Connections of Posttraumatic Stress and Growth in Childhood Cancer Survivors and Their Parents
Koutná, Veronika ; Blatný, Marek ; Jelínek, Martin ; Vobořil, Dalibor
Posttraumatic stress (PTS) and growth (PTG) have been described in both childhood cancer survivors and their parents. This study aims to analyse the parent-child connections in self- reported PTS and PTG as well as the concordance of child self-reported and parent proxy- reported PTG. The sample included 142 parent-child dyads. Both survivors and parents self- reported PTS and PTG. Parents also proxy-reported PTG in their child. Correlations were performed between self-reported measures of PTS and PTG as well as parent proxy-report of PTG in the child. Parent proxy-reports of PTG in their child are more strongly related to parental own PTG than to PTG self-reported by the child. Parental PTS and PTG are correlated, but in survivors, PTS and PTG are not related. Parent proxy-reports of PTG in their child may reflect their own PTG rather than PTG of their child. The relationship between PTG and PTS in the context of childhood cancer differs depending on the reporter (parent/child).
Relationship of Posttraumatic Stress and Growth with Quality of Life in Childhood Cancer Survivors
Koutná, Veronika ; Blatný, Marek ; Jelínek, Martin ; Vobořil, Dalibor
Childhood cancer is an event with the potential for both posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and posttraumatic growth (PTG). While full PTSD is rare in childhood cancer survivors, PTG is common in this population. The relationship between posttraumatic stress (PTS) and PTG has not yet been clearly established, and the relationship between PTG and quality of life (QOL) is unclear. In a group of 188 childhood cancer survivors, we used correlation analysis to determine the relationship of PTS/PTG with specific dimensions of QOL. In the younger group (up to 12 years), the QOL correlated only with PTS, the connection with PTG was not proven. In the older group (from 13 years), QOL correlated with PTS and PTG, but correlations were stronger for PTS. The relationship between PTS and QOL was negative in both groups, the relationships between PTG and QOL in the older group was weakly positive. The relationship of PTG and successful adaptation and good QOL remains questionable.
Posttraumatic stress and posttraumatic growth in members of fire rescue service
Holubová, Markéta ; Niederlová, Markéta (advisor) ; Boukalová, Hedvika (referee) ; Honzák, Radkin (referee)
Posttraumatic stress and posttraumatic growth in members of fire rescue service (Abstract) Firefighters often work under circumstances that endanger their lives or physical integrity and witness traumatic experiences of other people while managing effects of devastating emergency situations. As a result of this exposure they can suffer from trauma and stress related disorders. However, traumatic experiences may also offer potential for growth. This thesis is aimed at posttraumatic stress - symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and posttraumatic growth in members of fire rescue service. The main objective is widening of existing posttraumatic research in professional rescuers with findings from multinational sample of firefighters. Sample consisted of firefighters from Czech Republic (N=302) and six other European countries (N=2241). Study was carried out through questionnaire-based data gathering. Symptoms of posttraumatic stress were assessed via self-rating measure Impact of event scale - revised, posttraumatic growth via Posttraumatic growth inventory - short form. Comparison of Czech and European firefighters was made with the premise that among members of this professional group there would be found no differences. Subtle dissimilarities were, however, observed in several measured...
Posttraumatic growth after death of a close person
Finkousová, Andrea ; Valentová, Hana (advisor) ; Presslerová, Pavla (referee)
The bachelor thesis deals with the theme of posttraumatic growth in regards of death of a close person. It focuses on young adults, who have experienced death of a relative within their adolescence and adulthood, whom they have been in a close relationship with (a parent, grandparent). The purpose of the thesis is to detect the occurence of the posttraumatic growth in nine young adults and to determine in which areas and how does the posttraumatic growth manifest. Furthermore, to compare the outcomes with the concepts of Tadeschi and Calhoun, Janoff-Bulman and with "the model of the battle" used in the dissertation work of Hana Valentová. The theoretical part is dedicated to description of the theme of death of a loved one and to the narration of posttraumatic growth, its definition, models and the factors of infuence. The empirical part of the work uses qualitative research using semi-structured interviews with nine respondents and subsequent content analysis using open coding. The analysis has revealed seven main areas of posttraumatic growth: the area of relationships, ability to trust in the midst of a crisis situation, spiritual growth, professional direction, reconstruction of the relationship with self, the value of life and new possibilities. Within the research a few variables have...
The role of family and close social relationships in the narratives of Israeli women who experienced stillbirt
Dargan, Keren ; Hasmanová Marhánková, Jaroslava (advisor) ; Tučková, Anna (referee)
This thesis examines the social context of stillbirth and its impact on women's life and on their relationships with their family members. The study sample includes 8 adult women from Israel. Israel is a country characterized by a high number of children in families and the centrality of religion in society. The methodology used in this study was semi-structured interviews. Our results were similar to those of previous studies in terms of the partner's attitude to the event. On the other hand, the results included novel findings regarding other family members' coping with the stillbirth event. Solidarity and other types of empathy were found to be relevant according to women's stories; whereas some filial norms were met with more ambivalent responses. This thesis demonstrates the importance of intergenerational solidarity, the mass influence of cultural context and ambivalence within everyday situations and the meaning of empathy from close family members. Particular attention needs to be paid to the intergenerational perspective, which focuses on the family (couple, divorced or single units) or the wider society in which they live. Moreover, the experience of particular social groups further exploration; for instance, single mothers and surrogates.
An Understanding of Transgenerational Transmission in a Family from a Perspective of Middle-Aged Individuals
Tanzerová, Adéla ; Preiss, Marek (advisor) ; Viktorová, Ida (referee)
This rigorous thesis focusses on transgenerational transmission and the repeated themes of family memory from the perspective of middle-aged individuals. It is based on the master's thesis called Posttraumatic stress and growth in holocaust survivors and their families. Firstly, the theoretical part defines the terms 'stress', 'trauma' and 'posttraumatic growth'. Afterwards, attention is brought to the historical perspective on traumatic events of the 20th century which deeply affected the lives of respondents (the Second World War, the period of communism) and the topic of transgenerational transmission in the family narrative. The empirical component of the thesis is based on quantitative and qualitative research. The first part is dedicated to the mapping of specific aspects of posttraumatic stress and growth in Holocaust survivors and their offspring (N = 150, data collected by CEITEC). In accordance with other studies, the thesis concludes that Holocaust survivors and their offspring have higher levels of posttraumatic stress and growth and that linear dependence exists between these two phenomena. By contrast, the qualitative research (N = 21) was focused on the transgenerational transmission in the family memory: namely the topics of family roles and functioning as well as subjects such as...
Posttraumatic stress and growth in holocaust survivors and their families
Tanzerová, Adéla ; Preiss, Marek (advisor) ; Juríčková, Veronika (referee)
This master's thesis focusses on long-term effects of the Holocaust on the generation of survivors as well as on their offspring. Firstly, the theoretical part defines the terms 'stress' and 'trauma'. This is followed by an outline of possible reactions to severely stressful situations as well as questionnaires that can be used to measure the levels of traumatization. Afterwards, attention is focused on the phenomenon of posttraumatic growth, mainly based on the perspectives of L. G. Calhoun and R. G. Tedeschi who identify five domains of growth. The possibility of facilitating posttraumatic growth is briefly mentioned alongside with one inventory that can be used to measure the extent of positive change following traumatic experiences. Furthermore, the complexity of the Holocaust is discussed and generations of the Holocaust survivors and their offspring are characterised. In conclusion, attention is drawn to the studies that are concerned with the transgenerational transmission of trauma. The empirical component of the thesis is dedicated to the mapping of specific aspects of posttraumatic stress and growth in Holocaust survivors and their offspring. This data was collected by using a PTSD CheckList (PCL-C) and a Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI), and afterwards was processed by quantitative...

Quality of life of childhood cancer survivors: Results of the second stage of longitudinal study QOLOP
Blatný, Marek ; Koutná, Veronika ; Jelínek, Martin ; Blažková, T. ; Kepák, T.
The Brno Quality of Life Longitudinal Study of Paediatric Oncology Patients (QOLOP,N = 225) is a prospective longitudinal study of the quality of life of children and adolescents after treatment of pediatric cancer, which was started in 2006. This paper summarizes the main results of the second stage of this study. Three studies that dealt with longitudinal trends in quality of life, changes in the level of depressive symptoms and predictors of posttraumatic stress and posttraumatic growth, showed that more important than objective medical data (type of diagnosis, severity of late effects) are personality characteristics (negative emotionality) /nand parenting factors, i.e. factors that are not primarily related to the disease and can be suitably influenced.
